MW Editor’s note. If you’ve followed Mentoring Warriors, you will notice we focus a lot on the practical living out of one’s faith. Having a holistic view of God impacts every aspect of our manhood journeys. All of this is undergirded by a biblical foundation of core beliefs. As we mature, we need to be challenged anew in what we believe. Your worldview greatly impacts how you behave. Over the next few months, we will sprinkle in a few posts that look at the core beliefs essential for life. These are taken from the Mentoring Warriors’ Statement of Faith. It can be found at https://mentoring-warriors.com/statement-of-faith/
We believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only begotten Son, conceived by the Holy Spirit. We believe in His virgin birth, sinless life, miracles, and teachings. We believe that Jesus lived a perfect life so that he might be our substitution that is needed to satisfy the penalty for our imperfect lives.
Several passages from the Bible are referenced below. We will take a few of them and unpack what they mean. Take some time to check out all of the passages listed below.
Matthew 1:18-23; 3:17; 8:29; 14:33; 16:16; 28:5-6; Luke 22:70; 24:46-47; John 1:1, 14; 10:30; 11:25-27; 17:1-5; Acts 1:9; 2:22-24; 7:55-56; Romans 1:3-4; 2 Corinthians 5:19-21; Gal 4:4-5; Philippians 2:5-11; Colossians 1:15; 2:9; 1 Timothy 2:5-6; 3:16
Matthew 1:18–23 (ESV): 18 Now the birth of Jesus Christ took place in this way. When his mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together, she was found to be with child from the Holy Spirit. 19 And her husband Joseph, being a just man and unwilling to put her to shame, resolved to divorce her quietly. 20 But as he considered these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. 21 She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.” 22 All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet:
23 “Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son,
and they shall call his name Immanuel.”
(which means, God with us).
To be betrothed in the Jewish culture was in essence, to be married; it’s just that the man and woman had not consummated the marriage with sexual intercourse, yet. That’s why marrying a woman who was not a virgin was disgraceful; grounds for divorce.
There’s something to be said about Joseph’s character. “Being a just man and unwilling to per her to shame…”
Imagine yourself betrothed (engaged) to a beautiful woman. Your heart is set upon her. You can’t stop thinking about her. Because God values purity, marrying her as a virgin (both of you) is part of you two entering into a covenant marriage.
Then, the worst news happens. She’s pregnant, and you know for sure it is not your baby. Consider Joseph’s emotions. Frustrated. Disappointed. Yet, loving Mary enough to put her away (divorce) her quietly, to minimize her shame.
God intervenes, telling Joseph to not divorce Mary, but to take her for his wife. Why? Because the child in her is conceived by the Holy Spirit.
We touched on this in our post on Who is God https://mentoring-warriors.com/2025/05/core-beliefs-who-is-god/
But pause long enough to think about it. A human being is conceived by God. A miraculous conception. Holy Spirit semen. Somehow, God supernaturally impregnated Mary. Not in the traditional male-female intercourse but creating a sperm in her that was the exact one; Jesus, the one and only Son of God. Jesus, fully God and fully human.
John 1:1 (ESV): 1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
Now, here’s a mind-blowing thought! Jesus existed before the world was created. The Word is eternal. Jesus was with God at the beginning of Creation. Jesus is God.
I’ve heard of a jingle that brings this home:
The Bible is the written Word of God. On every page, on every line, it tells us of the Son Divine.”
Acts 1:9 (ESV): 9 And when he had said these things, as they were looking on, he was lifted, and a cloud took him out of their sight.
Jesus, the resurrected Saviour appears to more than 500 people in and around Israel. Then as promised, he ascends to Heaven and is now seated at the right hand of God the Father. It was a partly cloudy day when Jesus ascended. At some point the eyes of those on the ground saw Jesus and then he was no more.
Perhaps Jesus went into another dimension of Heaven that still allows for a physical body but is not in the Universe as we know it. Jesus is fully human and fully God.
Romans 1:3–4 (ESV): 3 concerning his Son, who was descended from David according to the flesh 4 and was declared to be the Son of God in power according to the Spirit of holiness by his resurrection from the dead, Jesus Christ our Lord,
Jesus is from the line (lineage) of David. He is not some random dude God chose. He is the second person of the Trinity; the only one to be born of a virgin as a human, was crucified, buried, and resurrected from the dead. Jesus is our only living hope because he is still alive!
2 Corinthians 5:19–21 (ESV): 19 that is, in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting to us the message of reconciliation. 20 Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, God making his appeal through us. We implore you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God. 21 For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.
This Gospel message Jesus preached and lived out is now entrusted to us, who believe. We are to be ambassadors for Christ, imploring others to be reconciled to God. I love verse 21. God made Jesus, who never sinned, but became our sin sacrifice so that in him we might take on his righteousness. This is a supernatural transaction, even I at times don’t fully comprehend. Because of Christ, I can be righteous, clean, pure, and forgiven! The key is to be reconciled to God. To repent of my sin and trust completely in the finished work of Jesus on the Cross.
Have you?
Philippians 2:5–11 (ESV): 5 Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, 6 who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. 8 And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. 9 Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, 10 so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
When Christ ascended, it opened the door for the Holy Spirit to come and live inside every believer. Therefore, as we yield to him, we take on the mind of Christ. Our worldview, our actions reflect Jesus increasingly, in proportion to our walking with him.
Will you bend your knee to Jesus?
Colossians 1:15 (ESV): 15 He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation.
If you want to see what God looks like, look to Jesus. Jesus is the exact image of the invisible God. Jesus is God!
1 Timothy 2:5–6 (ESV): 5 For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, 6 who gave himself as a ransom for all, which is the testimony given at the proper time.
A young man I know has for years bantered around the reality of these verses in 1 Timothy 2. He thinks there are other ways to get to God, other than Jesus. If my friend is right, then Jesus is a liar. Frankly, that is a hard pill to swallow. One finite human claiming he knows better than God; that there is more than one mediator between God and man.
Either man is top dog in all creation, or Jesus is.
I choose Jesus.
Here’s a YouTube link that sums up the person of Jesus Christ.
That’s My King!
