MW Editor’s Note: One of the privileges Mentoring Warriors has is officiating weddings of young warriors with their brides! Here is part 1 of a wedding sermon that parallels the relationship Jesus has with the Church (his bride) and the marriage between a husband and wife. Be sure to catch the conclusion to this important talk.
Today is a glorious day! A day of rejoicing! A day of seeing two amazing and deeply loved people come together in holy matrimony. As husband and wife in a covenant marriage, before all of us here and most importantly, before God.
But today is not just one isolated day out of thousands. If the Lord gives you long life, and you live to be in your 80s, you will have lived over 30,000 days. Given your ages today, that means you will have over 21,000 days to live and love as husband and wife in a Christ-honouring way.
When I mention this being not just an isolated day, I want us to focus on the reality, whether you came in here realizing this or not, that you, I, all of us, are part of a MUCH LARGER story. An eternal story. A story of fall (sin) and redemption (Jesus). It is a story of restoration through the shed blood of Christ. Jesus, the resurrected Christ.
The second person of the Trinity. The one who redeems our life from the pit. Jesus, the King of Kings and Lord of Lords. Jesus, the perfect, sacrificial lamb who once for all paid the penalty of our sin. The Lamb who is returning for his bride, that is, his church; those of us who are being redeemed. Those who have confessed their sin, trusting in Jesus Christ as the one and only true Saviour.
I was 12 when I trusted Christ as my Saviour. By the power and conviction of the Holy Spirit, my pre-teen heart figured out not just why Christ came, but why he died and rose again.
John 14:6 was the clincher for me.
Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
Jesus is the only way to God the Father. He is the truth. Every word he says can be trusted. Jesus NEVER lies!
And, he is our life. Our eternal life which begins at the moment we trust Jesus as our Lord and Saviour. It’s an invitation from God himself to all who will repent of sin and trust completely in Jesus for true eternal life.
I can say this without a shadow of doubt that if you are here and do not have a living relationship with Jesus Christ, Tobie and Jaden would want nothing more than you to encounter him today.
This brings us to a part of the larger story that is yet to come. The Marriage Supper of the Lamb.
Later on, after the ceremony we will gather for a meal. This meal is symbolic, a glimpse of the marriage feast Jesus will have with his redeemed, his beloved, the church.
When Jesus returns, AND HE WILL, those who have trusted in him for their salvation will be invited to the marriage table. It will be the feast that tops all feasts ever! It will be the crowning, majestic, grandest, most joyful, celebrated marriage supper of all time!
In Scripture, we read of the bridegroom becoming betrothed (engaged). He goes off to prepare a place for his new bride. No one truly knew when he was ready, butwhen he came, the Bride and everyone was excited and ready!
Let me read it from Revelation 19
The Marriage Supper of the Lamb
6 Then I heard what seemed to be the voice of a great multitude, like the roar of many waters and like the sound of mighty peals of thunder, crying out,
“Hallelujah!
For the Lord our God
the Almighty reigns.
7
Let us rejoice and exult
and give him the glory,
for the marriage of the Lamb has come,
and his Bride has made herself ready;
8
it was granted her to clothe herself
with fine linen, bright and pure”—
for the fine linen is the righteous deeds of the saints.
9 And the angel said to me, “Write this: Blessed are those who are invited to the marriage supper of the Lamb.” And he said to me, “These are the true words of God.”
A great multitude. Will you be amongst them? Will you be joining Jesus at the marriage supper? Will you be ready?
Or, is your heart attuned to the cares of this world so much, you have lost sight of the larger story God is writing?
Warrior On!
Be sure to check out the conclusion of this wedding sermon. It will be worth the conversation about the parallels between Jesus’ love for his bride, the Church and the love a husband has for his wife.
