What’s Your Basis for Truth?

In referring to the recent United States House of Representative Impeachment Hearings, I am in NO WAY making what I am about to say political; only using it as a reference to man’s insatiable pursuit of the truth. What is true? Are the Democrats, who voted for proceeding with impeachment doing so on the basis of truth, or based upon unrealized outcomes of the 2016 election? Are the Republicans who represent the minority in the House, defending the President out of an authentic pursuit of the truth, or because it’s a power issue?

If you are a Christ-follower, the question you need to ask yourself in EVERY aspect of your manhood is this: Am I in pursuit of truth based upon the greatest Truth-writer of all time (Jesus Christ), or am I a partially-yielded man who likes to weave my agenda to make my version of the truth?

There are times I’m at odds with another person. I disagree with what they stand for, for what they want me to do. The pain of that conflict wields itself into unkind words, hasty actions and worst of all alienation of two souls. The worst place I’ve seen this happen is between fellow Christ-followers. This is the sad testimony we send of what it means to follow Jesus. Who wants to follow Jesus when that is the example we portray? There are times the World acts more Jesus-like in their wrestling through life’s pursuit of the truth than we Jesus-followers.

Here’s the Truth

For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.   Ephesians 6v12 ESV

When you are at odds with your roommate, your best friend, your professor, your boss, the cop who pulled you over, the new rules at work that limit your freedom.  When you and your girlfriend disagree on how far you can go with each other physically and still be OK with Jesus, When you are conflicted within yourself, on the verge of depression, all of this, is not summarized in what or who you see. The root issue ALWAYS has supernatural implications. There are battles for the souls of men that go far beyond the temporal. The balance of eternity reigns in the hearts of men. The entire political battle in Washington is not the Democrats against Trump. It goes deeper. It’s an ideological issue of what it means to be free; what is Truth?

Looking for a Wife

I was in my mid-twenties, with an ever-increasing desire to be married!  The problem was finding a woman who shared common bonds with Christ. Not just Christian in name, but sharing deep-convictions about what life in Christ looks like. Your lifestyle choices come out of your deepest convictions. Truth comes from God Himself. The centrality of Scripture as the basis for Truth was key in me finding a wife. NO! I didn’t conduct theological interviews on dates!  1000 times NO! But, in pursuit of a woman I could marry, I needed to know was her pursuit of Truth and mine in sync? Did she value an on-going, living relationship with Jesus Christ, or was Jesus more about religion? When she makes decisions, does she anchor them in God’s Word, or in the latest trend on social media?

What does looking for a wife have to do with Truth? Everything! Truth is about relationships. It’s about living in truth with others. It’s about love. No one can have a truly healthy marriage if you are not on the same page truth-wise. In fact, true love comes out of true truth.

Before you demonize the other political party from yours, keep in mind, far beyond who is or isn’t in power, far beyond the arguments on either side of the aisle, is this underlying question:

Who are most in pursuit of God-exalting truth?  Not, which is the lesser of two evils?

Bringing this Home

Every time you act in self-focused, self-gratifying ways, you are exalting sin over truth. The goal of every true Christ-followers is the reduction of sin-filled ways and the increase of Christ-exalting ways in your life. And that, my friend, boils down to who you are living for, at every moment. A life yielded to the Holy Spirit is the only way I know how to get there; to a life of Truth.

I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. Galatians 2v20 ESV
